MODULE SIX

6.1 Routines & Chores

In this module, I discuss the importance of Routines and Chores in fostering independence and resilience in our children. I emphasized how structured routines provide security and predictability, which helps reduce stress and decision fatigue, ultimately leading to better behaviour and learning. I also introduce the three R’s: Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience, which are crucial for instilling routines. I share strategies for managing resistance from children, such as using the “three yeses” concept and reframing negative language into positive affirmations. I encourage you to reflect on your family’s routines and consider the activities provided to engage your children in contributing to household chores.

6.2 Disrespect and defiance

In this module, I address the sensitive topics of disrespect and defiance in children, emphasizing that these behaviours often stem from unmet needs or emotional overload rather than intentional disrespect. I encourage parents to shift their perspective and recognize that behaviours like back talk and eye rolls may indicate a child’s struggle to express themselves. I provide strategies for responding to these situations with empathy, modelling respectful communication, and setting clear boundaries with kindness. Additionally, I highlight the importance of understanding the developmental stages of children and the need for parents to practice self-regulation. As a follow-up, I have included activities for both younger children and teenagers to help them articulate their feelings and improve communication with parents.

6.3 Anger

In this module, we explore the complexities of managing anger, a natural but powerful emotion that can be challenging for both parents and children. While anger itself is not inherently bad, how we respond to it is crucial for emotional intelligence and healthy relationships. We discuss various strategies, such as practicing mindfulness, utilizing sensory tools, and creating safe words to help manage anger effectively. I also highlight the importance of sleep and nutrition in regulating emotions. As a call to action, I encourage you to implement these strategies and engage in the provided activities with your children to better understand and manage both your anger and theirs.
